DataTalks.Club: Inside the Fastest-Growing Data Science Learning Community
How a zero-cost learning platform grew to 64,000 members, delivered 1.2M video views, and helped hundreds launch data careers — all through community-driven education
The landscape of business intelligence is shifting dramatically. While companies spend millions on traditional data training, a remarkable phenomenon has emerged that's changing how smart leaders approach data science education. Let me show you why this matters to your bottom line.
The $0 Data Science Course You Never Knew Existed
DataTalks.Club has quietly become one of the world's largest free data science learning ecosystem. What started as one person's solution to endless LinkedIn messages has transformed into a movement that's producing more practical data scientists than many prestigious universities combined. Consider these numbers:
64,000 active professionals collaborating daily
1.2 million hours of practical knowledge consumed
44,000+ professionals completed hands-on training programs
Is it possible to take the course with very little money? Absolutely! Most of the software are opensource but you do need to invest in setting up accounts in OpenAI and other cloud based AI platforms (most of which offer free trial accounts).
The Origin Story : a covid pandemic baby
Alexey Grigorev, the founder, started his career as a Java developer before transitioning into data science. He worked as a Principal Data Scientist at OLX Group and held various data science positions at companies like Simplaex and Searchmetrics.
The idea for DataTalks.Club emerged from Alexey's experience of receiving numerous LinkedIn messages and consultation requests about data science careers. Instead of handling these requests individually, he decided to create a scalable solution. The platform's name was inspired by JavaTalks, an online community for Java developers where Alexey was previously active.
In April 2023, the platform became profitable enough for Alexey to leave his full-time job and focus entirely on DataTalks.Club. The community's success stems from its commitment to free education and active community engagement, making it a significant force in data science education.
